Based on a Nationally accredited course, the program is open to health care professionals, social workers, graduate or undergraduate nurses; enrolled nurses; nursing home or hostel personnel; carers, or for those who would like to volunteer for Hopewell Hospice Services and Paradise Kids.

This 26-hour course provides understanding, awareness and skills related to living and dying, and how to provide support, encouragement and care to someone who is dying or is bereaved.

This program has an emphasis on personal development through gaining knowledge, skills and attitudes that assist in providing care for those who are dealing with the end stage of life. Palliative care takes into account the various domains of human functioning, including the physical, the emotional, the spiritual, the mental, the moral, the social and the aesthetic.

Topics covered include:

  • Hospice and Palliative care principles, needs, and history.
  • The Volunteer and Palliative Care Team in Hospice care.
  • Communication and Listening skills
  • Spiritual Pain and Spiritual Care
  • Grief and Loss, and introduction to Grief counselling
  • Death and Dying; The Dying Child
  • Caring for the Carer: Relaxation and Stress Management, Avoiding Burnout
  • Patient Contact: Quality of Life, Complementary Therapies and Holistic Symptom Management
