Peter was the dux of the Brisbane State High School and won an Open University Scholarship to study medicine at the University of Queensland. After graduating he worked in England as the Surgical Regis-trar at the Doncaster Royal Infirmary and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. On returning to Queensland he was a Teaching Registrar in the Department of Surgery at the University of Queensland before becoming the Clinical Supervisor of medical students at the Royal Brisbane Hospi-tal. At this time he became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
After the war between East and West Pakistan, when Bangladesh became a separate nation, he worked as a volunteer surgeon in Bangladesh for three years. He returned to obtain a Diploma in Tropical Medicine from the University of Sydney. He then worked as the Supervisor of the Accident and Emergency Centre at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney for five years before accepting the position of Consultant Surgeon for the Solomon Islands.
When he returned to Queensland he was a general practitioner at Paradise Point on the Gold Coast, as well as a visiting medical officer at Hopewell Hospice on Hope Island. He took a particular interest in palliative care and continued to visit the Hospice for ten years until his retirement from clinical practice in 2003. He has been a member of the Hospice Board almost since its inception.
As a Christian, he has taken an interest in the academic side of Christianity, obtaining an Honours Degree in Divinity from London University in 1991 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Theology from the Brisbane College of Theology in 2008. His hobby is collecting coins relating to the history of Christianity, and he has written books and articles on the subject. He has twice been awarded the Handley Cup for numismatic literature by the Australian Numismatic Society. He also wrote a novel, Susan’s Faith, which describes a young woman’s spiritual journey. It will be made into a film and a percentage of the profits will go to Paradise Kids.
